BACKGROUND.
Our Club was the first Indoor Bowls Club in Dorset, operating above the old BBC Club on St Michael’s Trading Estate. Rinks were shorter and narrower and beams even lower than those in the North Mills premises. Not ideal, but we had to start somewhere; indeed several of today’s prominent bowlers from Weymouth and Dorchester started their careers here in Bridport. When the opportunity arose to move to North Mills, the sceptics among us were adamant that we could not afford it and that we would lose members. Many hours were spent examining the financial issues and history has shown that the decision to move was the correct one. Membership increased and we have since enjoyed considerable success as a Club.
PRESENT.
However, just as our old premises were outdated compared to North Mills, North Mills became outdated when compared with almost any other Indoor Bowls Club. The need to address the issue had been acknowledged and for at least ten years, the committee and working groups had been seeking alternative premises, suffering many setbacks, disappointments and frustrations along the way. Their persistence finally paid off and a viable option was found; namely the current premises at St. Andrews Industrial Estate where we provide 4 rinks x 36 metres, two changing rooms with modern toilet facilities, lounge/viewing area with kitchen.
